The role of the Technical Service Engineer is critical to the company’s success. Key responsibilities include:

  • Technical Leadership: Provide expert technical guidance within the Netherlands and broader Europe, supporting all stages of product deployment and integration.
  • Customer and Field Support: Conduct onsite technical support, troubleshooting, and quality assurance for lighting and electrical systems in greenhouses. Collaborate closely with local sales and engineering teams to resolve issues and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Project Coordination: Work with business units and sales teams to define technical solutions, ensure compliance with industry standards, and oversee cost-effective project implementations.
  • Field Feedback and Development: Offer crucial feedback to the engineering team to inform the development of new products and innovation concepts, with a focus on greenhouse lighting and electrical infrastructure.
  • Legal and Compliance: Partner with the legal team to assess and mitigate technical risks, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of engineers, managing technical workflows, mentoring team members, and overseeing the installation and maintenance of lighting systems.
  • Travel: Travel up to 50%, primarily within Europe, with occasional visits to the US and Canada for team meetings and customer support.


Hawthorne Gardening is a dynamic scale-up, dedicated to the research, development, and sales of innovative lighting solutions for greenhouse horticulture. The team comprises highly educated professionals with an international focus.


  • Education: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related field. A specialization in lighting or greenhouse electrical systems is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Extensive background in the R&D of high-end lighting or electrical infrastructure, with a focus on greenhouse applications. Experience in digital electronics, including low-voltage communication protocols and control systems (e.g., Modbus, RS485, Power Line Communication), is essential.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in system integration, IoT connectivity, and safety and regulatory standards (e.g., UL, CSA, CE, FCC). Expertise in both analog and digital control systems.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Dutch is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel up to 50% within Europe and occasionally to the US and Canada.
  • Soft Skills: Strong organizational and managerial abilities, excellent communication skills, and a customer-focused mindset. Ability to manage and motivate a team effectively.
  • Legal Requirements: Candidates must have the legal right to work in the EU.
