Senior Civil Project Engineer – IJmuiden

Introduction

Shape the future of sustainable steel at Tata Steel IJmuiden, at the heart of one of the Netherlands’ largest industrial transitions.

Function

You operate on the client side within an EPCM structure. This means steering on content, quality, and progress—not just executing, but critically assessing, adjusting, and safeguarding Tata Steel’s interests. You are a sparring partner for design, execution, and management.

The role

  • Directing and assessing design and execution (concrete/steel).
  • Preparing technical specifications, evaluating tenders.
  • Coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitoring planning, budget, and quality.
  • Identifying risks and opportunities, proactively advising the project team.

Organization

Tata Steel IJmuiden is at the forefront of one of the largest industrial transitions in the Netherlands: the Heracless program. The goal: shifting from traditional coal-based steel production to a process using a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) installation and an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Initially powered by natural gas, later by hydrogen. This will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 5 million tons per year—a significant contribution to the Dutch climate targets for 2030. The ambition is to achieve fully CO₂-neutral steel production by 2045. The project is nationally significant and complex: the plant will largely remain operational during the transformation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, with experience in industrial projects.
  • Experience working on the client side is an advantage.
  • Strong sense of overview, ownership, and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Dutch and English; German is a plus.

Offer

This job is open as a project assignment for both employees and freelancers (ZZPers). A competitive hourly rate or salary is offered. The project duration is currently difficult to predict. Full-time position, starting as soon as possible. Last but not least, contributing and learning in a critical stage of changing the steelmaking process for a sustainable future.
