Water Vision 2020 at Tata Steel

Thursday, Feb. 13, the Water Vision 2020 conference was held at Tata Steel. As a member of the Industrielinqs platform, we received some tickets to this congress. Since the conference was around the corner from us, this was an excellent opportunity to attend the afternoon program with a few guests.

The afternoon began with a speech by Theo Henrar, executive chairman of Tata Steel. This was followed by keynote speeches from Klaas Vos (sustainability manager at FrieslandCampina) and Perry van der Marel (managing director at North Water). They gave us an insight into how water plays a role in their industry.

data-lazy-src= Then the three nominees for Water Innovator of the Year 2020 held their pitches. The first nominee was AquaVest. This algorithm makes calculations within the water chain and translates them into investment decisions. This lays the foundation for more cooperation between various parties. The second nominee was Vivimag. This is a great example of urban mining that allows the mineral vivianite to be extracted from sewage sludge using a magnet. The third nominee was Zero Brine. This research consortium led by TU Delft extracts valuable minerals and clean water from brine, the salty residual stream left over after water treatment processes.

In the second part of the afternoon, Sander Kuipers came to the word. He is a process analyst at Tata Steel and took us through the steel company’s water flows. This was followed by an interactive program. Three potential “shadow ministers of water” presented their policy papers, followed by a debate. AquaVest Water Innovator of the Year 2020 was also announced.

During this interesting afternoon, our guests and ourselves learned a lot about innovations and sustainability in the field of industry and water.
